BASE 4 External Auditor Training

This course is designed for health and safety professionals who wish to conduct external safety audits for forestry employers seeking their SAFE Companies certification mainly using the BASE 4 audit standard.

Student Selection/Prerequisites
External Auditors for SAFE Companies will have a combination of education, occupational health and safety background, auditing experience, and forest sector experience. Applicants must meet the minimum prerequisites on the application form, summarized below.

OHS certificate/diploma

e.g. CRSP, CHSC, BCIT

Industry Work Experience

 

2 years operational forestry experience.

More experience preferred in a variety of forestry operations

OHS Experience

2 years supervising health and safety management systems.

3 years in a full time OHS leadership/management role

Safety Training & Experience

 

Recognized safety training and experience with health and safety responsibilities in the workplace.

Training and experience preferred 

Auditing Experience

5 years internal auditing experience. 5 years external auditing in a safety environment

 

Duration
A total of five days of classroom training with successful exam completion is required, followed by a self-directed student audit requiring both field and reporting time. The steps can be completed in a number of ways:

  1. Five Day: Student attends the five day External Auditor (EA) course, completes final exam, and submits a successful external student audit.
  2. Two Day: Student has successfully completed the BCFSC three day Internal Auditor course in either 2013 or more recently, and has passed their internal student audit. The student takes the External Auditor two day add on, writes the exam, and submits a successful external student audit.
  3. Challenge Exam + Two Day: Student has successfully completed the BCFSC three day Internal Auditor course prior to 2013. The student writes an entry exam prior to attending class, and upon receiving a passing grade, can attend the External Auditor two day add on. The student must pass the EA exam, and submit a successful external student audit to become certified. (The Council will work with the student to set up the exam date and time – in the four to six week period before each session.)

Note: The time commitment for the student audit will vary based on factors such as the size and type of operation involved, and often ranges from 7-12 days.

NOTE: The BASE 4 audit tool and training course are electronic. Participants are required to bring a personal device (laptop, tablet) that runs Microsoft Word 2010 or newer, to use during the session.

Acceptance into External Auditor training is on a competitive basis, with applicants’ qualifications reviewed before class selections are made. Submit a completed application/enrollment form for review and approval.
