This online course provides foundational knowledge for safe operation of Off-Road Vehicles (ORVs) in industrial forestry settings. It can be taken as stand-alone training, or as a prerequisite to BCFSC’s in-person Off-Road Safety Training and/or Off-Road Vehicle Operator Training.
Recognizing that ORV use is statistically one of the highest-risk job activities in the forest industry, this course focuses on the fundamental knowledge necessary for safe ORV operation. The training covers various ORV types, including four-wheel All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs), Utility Terrain Vehicles (UTVs), and side-by-sides.

Upon completing this course, you should be able to describe:
- Why ORV training is important
- Relevant BC laws governing the use of ORVs in BC
- Awareness of risk and risk management basics
- Use and care of PPE
- ORV components and functions
- Pre-trip and post-trip inspections
- Safe ORV operation and limits of the machine, and the operator
- Loading and unloading an ORV
- Route planning and navigating difficult terrain
- Radio use and road calling procedures
- Trailer pre-trip and usage, cargo securement
- Emergency repairs and situations
Duration & Delivery
Approximately 2 hours. This is an online course with self-paced, flexible 24/7 access and the expectation of participants completing the course prior to attending any field training.
